GE Vernova signs a contract for a new photovoltaic project supporting the decarbonization of the Turkish energy sector

The GE Vernova solar power plant is expected to power Kalyon Enerji’s 157 megawatt (MW) photovoltaic (PV) plant, making Kalyon Enerji one of the first companies in Turkey to produce solar panels using 100% % renewable energy.

“We are proud to be a driving force in Turkey’s clean energy transition,” said Dr. Murtaza Ata, board member of Kalyon PV. “By investing in the production of solar panels and supplying them to large solar power plants, we are not only providing sustainable energy solutions, but also creating jobs and contributing to Turkey’s energy independence.”

With a total solar capacity of 2.5 GWp/1.9 GWe in Turkey, including launched and ongoing projects, GE Vernova’s Flexinverter technology is playing a key role in the development of the Turkish solar industry.

“Having implemented several Renewable Energy Resource Zones (YEKA) projects in Turkey, we are now focusing on industries that want to produce energy for their own needs at a utility scale through photovoltaic projects such as the Kalyon PV solar power plant in Viranşehir and hybrid projects related to with renewable energy sources, including large-scale storage,” added Megi Gabriyel, regional leader for solar and storage solutions for the Middle East, Africa and Turkey at GE Vernova. “We offer comprehensive financing to support our clients, which includes support from export credit agencies. This financing package enables us to provide competitive financing options to facilitate and increase the deployment of renewable energy technologies in the energy sector.

The collaboration builds on existing relationships and leverages the success of Kalyon Enerji’s 1,347 MWp/1,000 MWe Karapinar solar plant in Konya Karapinar province, which has implemented GE Vernova’s Flexinverter solar technology. Launched in 2023, the Karapinar facility is the largest single source of solar energy in Turkey to date. The project was part of Turkey’s first YEKA GES solar tender announced in 2017 by the Turkish Ministry of Energy under the Renewable Energy Resource Zone (YEKA) program, which facilitates the development of large-scale solar and wind farms.

“Through our strategic relationship with GE Vernova, we ensure seamless coordination of supply chain and field operations, addressing key project execution challenges,” said Ali Murat Soydan, associate professor and president of Inogen Group. “Our professional teams of over a thousand employees will provide continuous support, enabling rapid intervention both during the installation and operation of the Viranşehir power plant.”

The rapid expansion of Turkey’s renewable energy sector, driven by growing demand for electricity and a commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, positions solar energy as a key driver of this growth. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), Turkey aims to deploy an impressive 10 GW of solar PV capacity between 2017 and 2027, with forecasts indicating an increase of around 500 percent to 52.9 GW by 2035.

Additionally, GE Vernova is uniquely positioned to implement Flexreservoir’s battery energy storage solution combined with financing to support the next phase of renewable energy projects in Turkey involving storage.
