Paraguayan authorities said on Monday in Asunción that the South American country’s global trade recorded an annual increase of 6.8% in the first four months of 2024. The e-commerce sector has also shown significant progress.

A study prepared by the Directorate General for Trade Policy and Integration of the Ministry of Economy shows that world trade amounted to USD 9,324,000 from USD 8,689,968 in 2023, a nominal change of USD 634,032. Paraguay’s main trading partner remained Brazil with a 25.4% share of activity, followed by Argentina (21.5%), China (20.3%), the United States (5.6%) and Chile (3.7%). ). Overall, Mercosur accounted for 72.6% of all deliveries.

While there was an overall increase in foreign sales in April, exports of corn, beans, soybeans, soybeans and electricity decreased significantly. The products with the greatest positive year-to-year variability are rice, pesticides and electrical wires.

Meanwhile, e-commerce in Paraguay saw growth in 2023, and this trend remained unchanged in the first quarter of 2024 thanks to new payment alternatives and greater trust in online platforms.

The president of the Paraguayan Chamber of Electronic Commerce (Capace), Andrés Veirano, said that online sales increased by 35% last year compared to 2022, exceeding $1.3 billion. “This growth is due to improved technological infrastructure, greater Internet access and favorable policies for e-commerce. In addition, initiatives to strengthen micro, small and medium-sized enterprises have allowed local companies to expand their presence in the digital market, he said.

“Capace recognizes the challenges facing consumers in Paraguay, especially regarding fraud and phishing in the digital environment. Faced with this reality, we have made user safety one of our main goals,” he added.
