J&K sets up WHO Tobacco Control Policy Committee – A Reader from Kashmir

Srinagar: In a landmark initiative, the Jammu and Kashmir government has ordered the formation of an empowered committee to implement Art. 5 section 3 of the World Health Organization Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (WHO FCTC) in the territory of the Union.
This significant step underscores the government’s commitment to protecting public health and improving tobacco control measures in the region.
The National Tobacco Control Cell, Kashmir, commends this initiative and acknowledges the key role played by Dr. Syed Abid Rashid Shah, Secretary, Health and Medical Education, in making this policy a reality. Dr. Shah’s steadfast efforts and commitment played a key role in this landmark development, demonstrating his commitment to safeguarding the health of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
Article 5.3 WHO FCTC is crucial to protect public health policy from the vested interests of the tobacco industry. Empowered committees will be tasked with ensuring that the formulation and implementation of tobacco control policies is free from tobacco industry influence, thereby promoting a healthier tobacco-free environment.
Meanwhile, the Tobacco Control Cell of the Directorate of Health Services, under the patronage of the Directorate of Health Services, Kashmir, has expressed its deepest appreciation for this initiative and the strategic leadership of Dr. Syed Abid Rashid Shah. His vision and proactive approach set a new benchmark for tobacco control efforts in the region.
This initiative marks a significant milestone in ongoing efforts to combat the tobacco epidemic and protect future generations from the harmful effects of tobacco.
