What do Italians do in bed with a smartphone?

88% of Italians use at least one digital system in their mattresses, the second highest number among many of the 16 international locations surveyed, second only to Mexico. Italians use over three gadgets in mattresses, which puts them first in Europe. One third of Italians keep at least two gadgets on their desk next to their bed. The gadgets most frequently used in mattresses include cell phones (90%), televisions (61%), and computer systems (36%). This was revealed by Cint’s NordVPN study, which included 15,600 people from 16 international locations as national consultants.

Adrianus Warmenhoven, cybersecurity advisor at NordVPN, emphasized: “We already knew that Italians do not part with their smartphones. Previous analyzes have shown that 80% of Italians also take their mobile phone to the toilet. However, the use of smartphones in informal settings causes individuals to become less aware of online safety.”

Favorite activities in the mattress

62% of Italians check emails and messages on the mattress, and 59% browse social media. 48% shop online or watch movies. Other activities include studying or listening to information (37%) and talking to family and friends (34%). A third play video games and 32% check the climate forecast. “In the morning, Italians choose to verify emails and text messages, and in the evening they choose social media. However, the need for reassurance may expose them to online security threats,” Warmenhoven added.

Impact on high sleep quality

64% of Italians believe that the use of digital gadgets has a destructive effect on the quality of sleep. Doom scrolling, or studying destructive information on the Internet, affects approximately 44% of Italians, contributing to negative emotions. Every third Italian believes that instead of sleeping, they waste valuable time watching the screen. Yet few people take steps to change these habits. In Italy, just one in three people use digital gadgets in mattress with their colleague, compared with half of those living in international locations like Mexico, Australia and the UK.

“Night” mode in Italy

Italy is the main country using “Night mode”, although 20% of Italians actually think they spend too much time in front of screens. 66% feel they manage their digital time effectively. “The irony of night mode is that while it promotes healthy digital habits, it usually results in extra time spent online, negatively impacts sleep, and increases privacy risks,” Warmenhoven concluded.
