ZDNET’s most important conclusions

  • The Ugreen Nexode power bank with a capacity of 48,000 mAh it’s available on Amazon for $199 (Prime customers can get it for $140).
  • It has huge capacity, fast charging and a large number of ports.
  • The display is slightly dim in bright sunlight.

We live in strange, upside-down times: power plants are getting smaller and power banks are getting bigger. I say: why not? There is definitely a gap to fill between these two types of devices, especially for those who want something more portable and don’t need mains power.

Manufacturers have responded by taking the form of a power bank and packing more batteries into it, adding different ports, attaching a handle to the top, and adding a light for good measure.

The result is devices such as Ugreen Nexode 48,000 mAh fast charging power bank and I like it very much.

Large but still portable

The advantage of its size is its huge charging capacity. Despite its weight, the capacious battery has significant advantages – it allows you to charge the iPhone 15 Pro almost 11 times and the 15-inch MacBook Air M2 once, leaving some energy for the smartphone.

There is a large display on the front of the device that shows the battery capacity and total input and output power. The display is a bit dim, but acceptable in all but the brightest conditions. There is also a single button that you can click to turn on, double-click to turn off charging, and triple-click to enter or exit sustain mode.

This simple interface is user-friendly, but I wish power bank manufacturers would print these instructions on the device itself so I wouldn’t have to mash a button like a chimpanzee to figure it out.

Plus: I Tested One of the Cheapest Power Plants That Made Traveling Easy (And Costs $250 Cheaper)

The ports are conveniently located on the front of the power bank, giving you plenty of choice. There are three USB-C ports, one providing a maximum output power of 140W and the other two with a maximum power of 100W each. Additionally, there are two USB-A ports, each with a maximum output power of 22.5 W.

There is a single-button LED strip on the side of the device that switches between low, medium, high and SOS modes. This comes in handy during camping, power outages, and for illuminating an evening picnic.

The heart of the device is eight LiFePO4 cells with a capacity of 6000 mAh and high energy density, intended for automotive applications. Compared to traditional lithium cells, these LiFePO4 cells can store more energy for the same weight and volume, are safer and much less susceptible to uncontrolled heat escape, and have a much longer service life. After 3,000 battery cycles, the capacity of these batteries should still exceed 80%, which is a 600% increase in durability compared to traditional batteries.

You can charge this device in about 90 minutes with a 140W USB-C charger (not included, but highly recommended, and if you don’t have one, I recommend Ugreen unit with a power of 140W). In the case of lower power chargers, the charging time will gradually increase.

Fortunately, the device comes with a 1-meter-long, 240-watt USB-C-USB-C cable.

I tested this power bank thoroughly, checking battery capacity, charging and discharging times, and port output power. The power bank passed all these tests with flying colors, meeting the high expectations I place on every Ugreen product.

ZDNET purchasing advice

Not everyone needs a giant power bank, but for those who do and may have been considering purchasing a power bank but don’t need AC, a large capacity power bank like Ugreen Nexode 48,000 mAh might fit the bill.

At $199, it’s not cheap, but it’s a solid, well-made device that should last for years. If you are an Amazon Prime member, you can purchase this power plant for just $140.
