Google’s Find My Device is designed to provide an additional layer of user security

The famous tipster took a look at the latest version of the Find My Device app to discover a new biometric security option for users.

Google has teased “Remote Lock” for Find My Device on I/O, stating that users can remotely lock their devices using their phone number and it poses a security challenge.

As Google continues to expand its new Find My Device network to more users, plans are emerging to strengthen its security.

As AssembleDebug noted in collaboration with Android Authority, the app’s code includes an additional layer of biometric security. Since the latest version of the application, a biometric option appeared on the same page asking for Google account credentials.

Once enabled, users should be able to quickly log in using their fingerprints.

This will likely give users greater peace of mind when toggling the “Don’t ask again” option when using their Google account password. It is suspected that the two solutions will work in tandem, as users will be able to leave their credentials saved on their devices with an additional layer of verification of their identity.

It’s unclear when Google plans to implement a biometric security layer in the Find My Device app. However, the tipster believes that this could happen once the network becomes more “ubiquitous”.

AssembleDebug was then able to generate Google’s planned “Remote Lock” feature for the web application. Created with a recent Play Services update, there’s a skeleton feature, but without the actual functionality.

During I/O 2024, Google teased the Remote Lock feature, stating that users can lock their phones by using their phone number and completing a security challenge. We don’t expect this until “late this year” after Play Services allows the feature to be properly enabled.

On the more popular side, Google started rolling out Find My Device to more users in early May. Shortly before I/O 2024, residents of Japan and the UK noticed that a new network had appeared on their devices. What’s more, even more users in the US have started to notice that the app on their phones is updated. The expansion of the network was complemented by an extensive range of devices ready to support its functionality.

We started noticing its availability on the Pixel 8 by purchasing it on the Moto Razr Plus.

It should be noted that Google’s Pixel series can be located without power or when the device is turned off. Other devices, such as the Moto foldable model, are missing this information when viewing the online description of how the device works.
