SLCPD used robots to investigate two suspicious calls over Memorial Day weekend

SALT LAKE COUNTY, Utah, May 28, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) – Salt Lake City Police Department investigators used the department’s Hazardous Devices Robot to investigate two calls for suspicious circumstances over Memorial Day weekend.

In the Magna case, the HDU robot helped detectives determine that the object posed no threat.

According to a press release from SLCPD, the investigation into Salt Lake City is ongoing.

The first investigation began at 10:53 a.m. Sunday when a caller contacted dispatch about a suspicious item found in a grassy area near 1400 North and 7200 West in Magna.

“Due to the appearance of the item, the officers requested assistance from the SLCPD Hazardous Devices Unit,” reads a statement from the SLCPD public relations department.

“Detectives used a robot to take photos of the object. After a thorough investigation, detectives seized the item.” No details about the facility were provided.

As the initial investigation continued, dispatch was contacted regarding items found in a rental car at Salt Lake City International Airport.

“The items included components typically used for controlled explosives such as construction or demolition,” the news release said.

“HDU detectives responded and safely secured the items. Detectives continue to investigate.”

The department urged people who spot a potentially dangerous device not to approach or touch it. Instead, call 9-1-1.
