Kwc reveals a shocking case of a patient who suffered cardiac arrest after having a stitch placed

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Management Board:

“Kowloon West Cluster (KWC) today (May 28) announced the case of a patient who suffered cardiac arrest following suturing surgery:

A four-year-old girl was brought to the emergency department (A&E) of Yan Chai Hospital (YCH) by ambulance accompanied by her father at around 8 p.m. on May 25 due to a head injury. At that time, the patient was an outpatient. After an initial examination by YCH medical staff, fever and a two-centimeter wound in the occipital region were found. The patient was conscious at the time of assessment. X-ray examination of the chest and skull did not reveal any abnormalities. The doctor prescribed a stitch for the wound.

The case files show that at 11:10 p.m. the condition of the wound was examined by a nurse. The patient’s care assistant helped him position himself and position him so that the nurse could place a suture in the occipital area. After the stitching was completed, at approximately 11:31 p.m., the nurse determined that the patient was unconscious and had no pulse. Medical staff immediately performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation and recommended intubation. At approximately 11:49 p.m. the patient returned to spontaneous circulation. The medical staff ordered a chest X-ray and brain computed tomography, which did not reveal any abnormalities. The patient was transferred to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Princess Margaret Hospital (PMH) under escort from the PMH pediatric team for further observation and treatment. The patient is currently in critical condition.

Following the incident, the Cluster Patient Relations Officer maintained close contact with the patient’s family, and the PMH and YCH clinical teams met with the patient’s family to explain the clinical situation in detail and provide them with all possible assistance.

KWC is very concerned about this matter and has reported it to the Hospital Management through the Advance Incident Reporting System. PMH will continue to provide appropriate treatment to the patient. Because it is very rare for a patient to suffer cardiac arrest while suturing, KWC invited pediatric and emergency department experts to review the case and ordered further testing for rare diseases to determine the cause.
