Bomb Squad called for ‘live device’ in Port Costa

On Saturday, the Crockett Carquinez Fire Department responded to a countywide garage sale where it was discovered that a resident had “energized equipment,” prompting a bomb squad response.

According to Steve Trotter, public information officer, the incident began around 5:30 p.m. after a resident brought items to firefighters to look at.

“They turned out to be military grenades and some type of law enforcement ammunition used by SWAT teams,” Trotter said.

The incident prompted the fire department to issue a warning to the community over unsafe conditions in Port Costa. Crews were called to Canyon Lake Drive for reports on two military orders. The CHP and Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office evacuated the nearby area and blocked traffic at the end of Reservoir Street and Carquinez Scenic Drive.

Until 8:10 p.m Travis Air Force Base The Explosive Ordnance Disposal Department removed two energized devices from the area. The situation was now under control and it was safe to return to the area. All roads in Port Costa were subsequently reopened.
