T-Mobile adds Applecare to its device protection plan

On Monday, T-Mobile added Applecare to its premium phone protection program, giving its iPhone and iPad customers the ability to take advantage of Apple’s official extended warranty service for an additional fee.

All major carriers offer additional insurance-like protection programs that cover customers’ lost or damaged phones. However, consumer advocates have raised concerns that some repairs made through the programs are not sanctioned by Apple and sometimes result in greater technical problems with phones and voided warranties.

Often, Apple performs repairs cheaper than carriers, and without its work, it voids your iPhone warranty.

T-Mobile said it will add official Applecare protection to its $12-a-month premium device protection plan, which also offers data backup and malware protection services. Subscribers who opt into the similarly priced JUMP upgrade program, which allows customers to update their phones more frequently, will also be covered by Applecare.

T-Mobile previously used third-party repair company Assurant to repair damaged phones as part of its protection plan. Assurant will continue to provide repairs under T-Mobile’s basic device protection plan, which costs $10 per month, and for customers who do not own Apple devices.
