Spain officially recognized the independent Palestinian state on Tuesday after the decision was approved at a meeting of the Council of Ministers chaired by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.

In a statement issued ahead of the meeting, which took place at the Moncloa Palace (the seat of the presidency) in the Spanish capital, Sanchez said: “This is a historic decision whose sole purpose is to help Israelis and Palestinians achieve peace.”

“We learned about the current situation in the Middle East from the media that the Gaza Strip is suffering from war and destruction. This cannot be tolerated. Spain’s decision could help bring peace to the Middle East. I think it’s the right decision,” he said. local resident of Madrid.

“For me, this is a very good decision that will help bring peace to the Gaza Strip. Israel is committing genocide there. This recognition will put pressure on Israel and is a very good way to end the war,” another resident said.

Spain is one of three Western European countries, along with Ireland and Norway, to formally recognize Palestinian statehood on Tuesday, cementing a joint move that further isolates Israel over its war against Hamas in Gaza.
