Ballot initiative to repeal the Renewable Energy Project Location Act with a low number of signatures

A group working to repeal the state’s renewable energy project siting law says its ballot initiative will not be on the November ballot. Citizens for Local Choice does not have enough signatures for the initiative to be placed on the 2024 ballot.

He wants to repeal a law passed last year that allowed the Michigan Public Utilities Commission, rather than local governments, to locate solar and wind farms.

Some say the bill passed by the Legislature and signed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer last year constitutes a government reallocation of funds.

Many municipalities have rejected plans by farmers and others to lease land for solar panels or wind turbines. Typically, this is because residential home owners don’t want renewable energy projects to “…ruin our rural atmosphere.”

Farmers who are unable to lease their land for projects often consider this situation to be a violation of their private property rights.

Opponents of the ballot initiative say the lack of enough signatures is not surprising.

“People like clean energy. They understand that clean energy is affordable. It’s good for the environment. This is good for our future and our health,” said Nick Dodge, communications director for the Michigan League of Conservation Voters.

Citizens for Local Choice says it will continue its petition drive now in hopes of getting it on the 2026 ballot.
