Green revolution in Baghdad: transforming waste into renewable energy

Baghdad (IraqiNews.com) – On April 1, Iraq’s National Investment Commission announced the launch of an ambitious project to generate electricity from waste in Baghdad. The initiative aims to expand to other provinces, demonstrating Iraq’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions and environmental protection.

Power forward: an integral part of a comprehensive energy strategy

This project is part of a broader initiative by the Iraqi government to adopt better energy solutions and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. By providing renewable energy and minimizing carbon emissions, Iraq aims to combat climate change and address the country’s severe environmental impact.

During the press conference, Dr. Haider Makkiyah, chairman of the National Investment Committee, emphasized that the waste-to-energy project has the full support of Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Al-Sudani. Makkiyah explained that the project will use advanced technology to process over 3,000 tons of waste per day, which is approximately 30% of Baghdad’s daily waste production.

Moreover, Salar Mohammed Ameen, vice-chairman of the committee, stated that a ministerial committee had been established in cooperation with the Ministry of Environment and the Baghdad Municipality. This committee will closely monitor the project and keep you updated on the latest global and regional developments in renewable energy.

Power shortages and hopes for the future

This project comes at a critical time as Iraq’s electricity production falls far short of demand. Due to the steady decline in fuel exports from Iran to Iraq, a significant gap in electricity supply has emerged, deepening the energy crisis.

The Iraqi people have high hopes for this set of projects, especially the waste-to-energy initiative. It promises not only to increase electricity production, but also to reduce waste and ultimately mitigate the effects of climate change. This comprehensive approach aims to address multiple issues simultaneously, offering a sustainable solution to the country’s pressing energy and environmental challenges.
