T-Mobile today announced plans to purchase UScell ​​wireless services for $4.4 billion. This transaction covers customers, stores and a selected spectrum of USmobile mobile networks.

According to T-Mobile, the purchase will provide millions of U.S. mobile customers with access to the T-Mobile network, improving connectivity in rural areas with poor network access. T-Mobile also plans to use UScell’s spectrum and wireless resources to expand its home broadband offerings.

T-Mobile’s press release says wireless customers across the U.S. “will benefit from more choice and more competition” – language aimed at federal regulators, who will have to approve the deal. UScell ​​will remain the owner of some of its spectrum and towers, and T-Mobile plans to lease space in about 2,000 towers.

US mobile customers will have the option to stay on their existing plans or upgrade to T-Mobile’s unlimited plan with no switching costs.

T-Mobile has already acquired MetroPCS and Sprint, with the latter merger coming in 2020 after it was previously canceled in 2014. U.S. regulators are concerned about the lack of a fourth major carrier in the United States and may be hesitant to approve yet this merger. another purchase from T-Mobile.

T-Mobile says the transaction should be finalized in mid-2025.
