Converting Barilla pasta boxes into e-commerce shipping packaging

On the occasion of World Recycling Day, the Barilla Group presented its innovative collaboration with Marie Kondo, the famous Japanese “queen of decluttering” and author, as part of the “Secondhand Box” initiative. This project, developed by LePub Italy, aims to transform Barilla pasta packaging for different types and sizes of pasta, from 500 g to 1 kg, into sustainable transport containers for second-hand clothes. Kondo shares its knowledge through video tutorials, instructing consumers on how to repurpose pasta boxes, promoting waste reduction and offering a sustainable alternative to packaging recycling. This initiative is in line with Barilla’s sustainability goals and encourages consumers to participate in environmentally responsible practices, giving packaging a second life. The initiative gained further traction on social media, leveraging the influence of global talent and influencers who use Kondo folding techniques to prepare clothing shipments. Barilla said this project is a testament to their commitment to environmental stewardship and broader efforts to reduce packaging waste.
