T-Mobile expands its operations with the acquisition of mobile networks in the US for $4.4 billion

T-Mobile is poised to acquire US Cellular’s wireless services for $4.4 billion, which will further expand the telecom giant’s potential with at least 2,600 additional towers.

T-Mobile will acquire US Cellular stores and at least 30% of its licensed assets to offer US Cellular customers “more competitive options,” according to the companies’ Monday press release.

This acquisition is expected to help the company provide wireless services to rural Americans, who make up nearly 40% of all current US Cellular customers.

The transaction is expected to be finalized by mid-2025, i.e. in line with T-Mobile’s earlier plans to expand fiber optic connections next year.

The acquisition is the latest move by T-Mobile to expand its operations to keep pace with growing competition in the US.

The acquisition of US Cellular is the second telecommunications operation consolidated by T-Mobile in the last two years. The first of them was Mint Mobile, a company backed by Ryan Reynolds for $1.3 billion.

The acquisition is expected to give T-Mobile a better position in rural areas with less competition, while also increasing its ability to fend off business rivals in the metropolitan market.

According to The Verge, the deal will give the telecommunications company 3 million more “low-band” and mid-band 4G customers by the end of this year.

Will there be a price change?

Because federal approval has not yet been obtained, details of the transaction remain unknown to the public, including whether existing U.S. cellular services will be affected.

As a reminder, T-Mobile recently confirmed a $5-per-line-per-month price increase on its legacy data plans, which includes several services for seniors and military veterans.

So far, T-Mobile has not raised bills for most Mint Mobile services following the acquisition, but rather rolled out a few of its services with the purchase of Mint Mobile products.
