Skimming devices found in Longmont stores

DENVER (KDVR) — Longmont police are urging businesses to check payment terminals after skimming devices were discovered over the holiday weekend.

Longmont police announced the discovery on Facebook on Wednesday.

The department said skimming devices were installed on several payment terminals of store customers over Memorial Day weekend. Skimmers were placed above legal keyboards and card swiping areas.

According to Longmont Public Safety, skimming devices found affected cards being swiped. Once you swipe your card, thieves can capture and retain your debit and credit card details.

The department is choosing not to name the stores affected.

“Revealing the names of retail stores does not protect against this type of theft. “Those responsible do not always act on the information they collect immediately,” Longmont Public Safety wrote on Facebook.

Now Longmont police want businesses in the city to thoroughly inspect payment terminals for possible installed skimming devices. If the device is found, the company should call police at 303-651-8555.

How to recognize a skimming device

Before you insert your card into the reader, the FBI has some simple and effective ways to protect your information.

Inspect the reader and look for any loose parts or damage. Scratches or damage to the adhesive tape may also indicate tampering. If you shake the skimmer a little and feel it is loose, tell the employee.

If you think you have been scammed, contact your credit card company or the bank that issued the card. You should also notify local law enforcement of possible scams.
