Tennessee’s governor signs bill requiring domestic violence perpetrators to wear GPS devices

Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee signed a bill requiring courts to order domestic violence perpetrators to wear a GPS device in the state.

HB2692/SB1972 would require the perpetrator to wear a GPS device unless it no longer poses a threat to the alleged victim or public safety. The act was signed by the voivode on Tuesday.

The legislation would also provide a domestic assault victim with a device that would tell them whether the perpetrator was within a certain distance of “the victim’s cellular device or electronic receiving device.”

Additionally, the law requires that a county or municipality that uses GPS devices must enter into a written contract with a qualified contract service provider. It also waives civil and criminal liability in certain circumstances.

The bill’s sponsors are Senator Paul Rose (R-District 32) and Representative Clay Doggett (R-District 70).
