Pioneering renewable energy solutions in New York

A pioneering electrical networking and power systems laboratory has opened at NY CREATES’ Albany NanoTech complex. The Advanced Grid Innovations for Energy (AGILe) Lab, located in the Zero Energy Nanotechnology Building (ZEN), is at the forefront of real-time testing and validation of electrification technologies, grid improvements and renewable energy integration solutions.

Located on the grounds of the nation’s premier nonprofit semiconductor research and development facility, AGILe serves as a global center for electrical grid research. The facility aims to support innovation leading to a more sustainable future.

The expansion enables testing of the latest technologies

Developed by the New York Power Authority (NYPA), AGILe facilitates real-time simulation of electric grid scenarios without compromising system integrity. This expansion enables testing of cutting-edge technologies and their impact on New York’s electric grid, supporting the accelerated integration of renewable energy sources and increasing grid resilience.

NYPA Trustee Laurie Wheelock emphasized the importance of AGILe’s collaborative efforts to advance the goals of the New York Climate Act. NYPA President and CEO Justin E. Driscoll emphasized the laboratory’s importance in supporting the state’s transition to a clean energy economy.

$9 million to support advanced technology research

The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) has committed $9 million to support advanced technology research in AGILe. This funding will support initiatives focusing on network reliability, modernization, cybersecurity and operational agility over the next three years.

AGILe’s capabilities include assessing the impact of renewable energy integration on New York’s electric grid. By enabling the combination of clean energy technologies such as battery storage systems and electric vehicles, AGILe serves as a testing ground for product improvement and evaluation of their performance.

Progress on New York’s clean energy agenda.

Aligned with New York’s climate goals, AGILe will facilitate research collaborations with industry stakeholders, utilities and research entities. Assemblymembers Didi Barrett, Patricia Fahy and John T. McDonald III praised AGILe’s role in advancing New York’s clean energy agenda.

With the launch of AGILe, New York is strengthening its commitment to sustainable energy innovation, positioning itself as a global leader in clean energy research and development.
