Power semiconductor devices: the world’s most important conference in Bremen

The world’s most important conference in the field of power semiconductor devices will be held on June 3-6, 2024 in Bremen. The host of the event, which takes place only every four years in Europe, will be the Institute of Electric Drives, Power Electronics and Devices (IALB) at the University of Bremen.

“We are, of course, extremely proud that we can host this important conference this year,” says engineering professor Dr. Eng. Nando Kaminski, who brought the event to Bremen. “ISPSD2024 – 36th International Symposium on Power Semiconductors and Integrated Circuits”, as its official title reads, will invite 500 leading scientists involved in power semiconductor research to the Hanseatic city.

Important elements of modern electronics

Power semiconductors are extremely important elements of modern power electronics. Without them, basic control elements and circuits in industries such as drive technology, energy supply, measurement and medical technology, telecommunications, automotive engineering, aviation and rail transport would be unthinkable today. The global power semiconductor market is growing rapidly and is currently worth over US$40 billion.

The ISPSD conference is held annually on a rotational basis in Japan, North America, Greater China and Europe – for example, it took place in Vancouver in 2022 and Hong Kong in 2023. Since its first conference in Tokyo in 1988, it has become the leading conference in field of power semiconductor devices. In 2024, the conference will once again be held on the European continent. The organizer, as General Director, is Professor Kamiński. Initial preparatory planning began four years ago during the last European ISPSD, and the final organizational processes have recently gained full speed.

Greetings from the senator and vice president

Vice-President for Research and Transfer at the University of Bremen, Michal Kučera, will deliver a welcome speech at the opening at Glocke on June 3 at 8:30, and Bremen’s senator for science Kathrin Moosdorf will speak at a reception in the Upper Town Hall on June 3 (7:00 p.m.). During the opening ceremony, Thomas M. Coughlin, president of the American electrical engineering society IEEE, which boasts over 400,000 members (equivalent to Germany’s VDE), will also present the Andrew S. Grove Award to Professor Tsunenobu Kimoto of Kyoto University in Japan.

The annual IEEE Andrew S. Grove Award is one of the highest awards that can be given to outstanding individuals in the field of semiconductor devices and technologies, covering all areas of semiconductors in microelectronics, optoelectronics, sensor technologies, high-frequency technologies, and power electronics.

There will be a panel discussion on “Women in Engineering” on Tuesday, June 4, 2024 (5:30 p.m., Glocke). The moderator will be Sarah Rugen, former research assistant at IALB.

The conference will be held in English.
