Cemex US signs renewable gas fuel agreement with Clean Energy to power fleet in Southern California

Cemex, a leader in the construction materials industry, and Clean Energy Fuels Corp. (NASDAQ: CLNE), the largest supplier of the cleanest fuel to the transportation market, announced a new fuel agreement to provide ultra-clean, renewable natural gas (RNG) to power 39 Cemex US ready-mix and cement trucks in Southern California. Cemex’s partnership with Clean Energy is the latest addition to its lower carbon fuel offerings for the California fleet.

The fleet is expected to deliver approximately 300,000 gallons of RNG annually and will utilize Clean Energy’s network of public stations in Southern California to refuel RNG. RNG is a carbon-negative transportation fuel that significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions by an average of 300% compared to diesel fuel.

In addition to the new fueling agreement, Clean Energy will launch a private fueling station exclusively for Cemex’s growing RNG fleet. The new station, located in Rialto, California, will feature timed fill dispensers and a dedicated quick fill dispenser for easy and cost-effective refueling. The construction project is expected to be completed by the end of this year, and refueling of Cemex trucks will begin on site shortly thereafter. Clean Energy will supply RNG to the new privately owned station and will operate and maintain the facility upon completion.

The transition of part of the fleet to RNG is part of the Cemex Future in Action program, which focuses on achieving sustainable excellence through climate action, circularity and natural resource management, with the main goal of becoming a net-zero CO2 emission company by 2050. The company is projected to reduce its fleet’s greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 8,822

metric tons of CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent) per year, which is equivalent to taking 1,981 gasoline-powered passenger vehicles off the road for a year or planting 137,648 trees*.

“As leaders in the building materials industry, we recognize the critical role we play in building a more sustainable future. Using renewable fuels is not just an option, it is a necessity,” said Francisco Rivera, regional president of Cemex USA – Western region. “What Cemex provides is essential to building communities across California and the country. By leveraging clean energy renewable energy resources, we are accelerating our ambitious sustainability goals, inspiring innovation, supporting resilience and building a legacy of responsible stewardship for future generations.”

“Cemex is not only a world-class leader in the building materials industry, but also one of the most advanced in thinking about our sustainable future. This expanded fleet of RNG trucks will help decarbonize the overall operation, as well as reduce emissions associated with idling trucks on site. Cemex’s RNG fuel agreement with Clean Energy is a significant step forward in reducing Cemex’s carbon footprint,” said Chad Lindholm, senior vice president of Clean Energy.

Clean Energy currently has a network of over 600 fueling stations across North America and continues to expand that number with stations purpose-built and strategically located for commercial fleets.
