Generative AI powers search on Fire TV

If you spend too much time searching and scrolling for something to watch, you’re not alone. According to them, the average streaming customer spends over 10 minutes searching for options every time they use a streaming service Nielsen State of the Situation Report for 2023.

Fire TV now offers a new way to search with Alexa that makes discovering something new to watch more fun and easier. The new AI-powered Fire TV Search combines AI with Fire TV’s extensive library of entertainment content and apps, allowing you to find personalized TV and movie recommendations using natural language.

You can ask Alexa to search for streaming content recommendations the same way you can ask a friend with an encyclopedic knowledge of TV shows and movies, using complex or nuanced language to ask for options based on topic, genre, plot, character, actor and even quotes. For example, you can say things like:

  • “Alexa, show me videos about dog-human friendship.”
  • “Show me psychological thrillers with surprise endings.”
  • “What movie has the line, ‘You’re killing me, Smalls?’

Ten years ago, Fire TV introduced a new way to find entertainment with your voice, and today we’re rediscovering that experience with the power of artificial intelligence.

This new Fire TV search engine is powered by Amazon’s Big Language Model (LLM), which allows customers to ask Alexa for personalized TV and movie recommendations using natural language. These recommendations are contextual, personalized, and include options from your Prime Video or other streaming subscription libraries, so you know which ones are free for you.

Getting started: Using Fire TV’s AI-powered search

To get started, simply ask Alexa to recommend content using a few words or phrase, such as:

Search by topic:

  • “Find sci-fi TV shows about time travel.”
  • “Show me a classic roommate sitcom.”

Search by genre:

  • “Find Korean Horror Movies.”
  • “Find me medical dramas.”

Search by plot:

  • “Find a mystery movie set on a private island.”
  • “Show me videos of people getting sucked into a video game.”

Search by quote:

  • “What movie has the line: “Life is like a box of chocolates?”
  • “Find me a show where someone says, ‘Winter is coming.'”
