Garlinghouse’s comments come as the U.S. cryptocurrency industry grapples with regulatory uncertainty resulting from a lack of clear guidelines stifling innovation in the sector.

“It is critical that the United States catches up with other leading economies and develops sensible and clear rules for cryptocurrencies,” Garlinghouse said. The lack of clear regulations in the US has led to numerous legal battles and significant uncertainty for cryptocurrency companies.

Ripple itself is currently embroiled in a high-profile lawsuit with the SEC over its sale of XRP tokens. The lawsuit is currently in the remedial stage, where key motions are filed and the judge’s decision is awaited.

The SEC is seeking nearly $2 billion in financial penalties: $876 million in compensatory damages, $198 million in judgment interest and $876 million in civil penalties for a total of $1.95 billion. The outcome of this stage is expected to set a precedent for the entire industry.
