Officers will be equipped with recording devices

Some Windsor Police officers will wear audio recorders as part of a pilot project.

Police officers will also have dashboard cameras.

Microphones and cameras will automatically start recording when officers respond to a call for emergency services and when the vehicle is stationary. They can also be turned on manually.

“Our members often work in difficult, dangerous and even life-threatening situations,” said Police Chief Jason Bellaire. “Having these microphones and cameras will help protect both our members and the public and reinforce our commitment to serving the community with excellence, professionalism and transparency.”

Twenty-six officers will receive the equipment for three months, ending September 2, 2024.

Police say the purpose of recording police interactions is to increase safety, improve evidence collection and provide additional transparency and accountability.

Windsor Police are launching the program after consultation with the volunteer-led Community Consultative Committee.

“Windsor Police’s introduction of body-worn microphones and dash cams is a commendable step towards transparency and accountability,” said Dr. Fazle Baki, chair of the Community Advisory Committee. “This initiative will have a significant impact on our community by increasing trust, providing unbiased documentation of police interactions and ultimately improving the safety of both officers and community members.”
