Swiss Steel Group is driving the green transformation through an initiative to supply its own electricity from renewable energy sources

Swiss Steel Group is pleased to announce its participation in the renewable energy consortium “EE-Industrie Initiative”. This initiative, which brings together 19 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Germany, aims to build, operate and use wind and photovoltaic power plants to independently supply ecological electricity.

Based on preliminary forecasts, the consortium will need a total of 220 MW of wind energy and 80 MW of photovoltaics. These impressive numbers correspond to approximately 35-40 modern wind turbines and a ground-mounted photovoltaic system covering an area of 960,000 square meters. The importance of a stable and competitive price for electricity from sustainable sources for the steel industry cannot be overstated. Particularly in the case of the electric arc furnace, where we as Swiss Steel Group are leading the way, the availability of affordable, green electricity is crucial to our continued decarbonization efforts.

Frank Koch, CEO of Swiss Steel Group, emphasizes the importance of this step: “As a manufacturer operating in the electric arc furnace market, we recognize the urgent need to diversify our energy sources in order to further reduce our carbon footprint. The initiative strongly believes that a collaborative approach offers the most promising opportunity to secure much-needed volumes of low-CO2 energy, leverage cross-selling effects and optimize the costs of green energy generation.

As a first step, the companies involved commissioned the development of a practical and legally compliant concept and the definition of framework economic conditions. At the same time, participants in this pioneering initiative call on politicians to support competitive green electricity.

Koch also commented: “We are electrified by the opportunity to become not only consumers, but also producers of green energy. The transition to CO2-neutral processes is crucial for the steel industry, and stable energy prices play a key role in this. As a company that is one of Europe’s leading producers of green steel, it is our responsibility to continue to actively contribute to decarbonization and expand our role as a trendsetter. However, to achieve this, we need a competitive overall price for green energy. Our joint efforts with the ‘EE-Industrie Initiative’ will not only accelerate our own green transformation, but also set an example and inspire other companies to follow this path.”

As this year’s winner of the German Sustainability Award, Swiss Steel Group is committed to further expanding its role as a pioneer in sustainable steel production and making an additional contribution to achieving climate goals through innovative solutions and partnerships.
