Amazon is celebrating the 10th anniversary of Fire TV devices with an AI update

As Amazon celebrates the 10th anniversary of the launch of the first Fire TV devices in 2014, the company unveiled new AI-powered search capabilities for these devices.

The new Fire TV Search feature has begun rolling out to US customers in English on select Fire TV devices running FOS6 and later. The service will be available on all eligible Fire TV devices in the US in the coming weeks.

Citing research that shows the average streaming customer now spends more than 10 minutes searching for options every time they access their streaming services, the company noted that the new search on Fire TV AI-Powered combines AI with Fire TV’s extensive library of entertainment content and apps, allowing users to find personalized TV and movie recommendations using natural language.

“You can ask Alexa to search for streaming content recommendations the same way you can ask a friend with an encyclopedic knowledge of TV shows and movies, using complex or nuanced language to ask for options based on topic, genre, plot, characters, actor, or even in quotation marks,” Amazon said in its guide to new features.

The new Fire TV search engine is powered by Amazon’s Big Language Model (LLM), which allows customers to ask Alexa for personalized TV and movie recommendations using natural language. These recommendations are contextual, personalized to users, and will include selections from their Prime Video libraries or other streaming subscriptions, so users know which ones are free.
