Why do Belgians make three quarters of their online purchases abroad?

Belgian customers shop online mainly in the Netherlands and Germany, and increasingly in China. Not just fashion: Belgians are increasingly buying food abroad. What’s going on?

Germany is the European leader

Germany is the largest e-commerce market in Europe, where the value of online goods sales is EUR 100 billion. France has 54.5 billion and the Netherlands 24.3 billion. In Belgium, e-commerce is worth just under ten billion euros.

The most avid online consumers can be found in the Netherlands, where online shoppers spent an average of €1,366 in 2022. Germans spent 1,196 euros on online shopping, the French 844 euros and the Belgians only 828 euros.
