George Russell explains why Mercedes is “very confident” in the 2026 powertrain regulations

While teams up and down the grid have been laying the foundations for the power unit for some time, all aerodynamic work will be banned until early 2025.

This means that regardless of early engine progress, there is still a “voyage of discovery” ahead for Mercedes and its rivals, as Silver Arrows technical director James Allison recently outlined.

“2026 is just around the corner, (but) it’s hard to look too hard into the future at the moment because we have to wait and wait and wait until we actually get the regulations,” he said. “Right now, honestly, most of the focus is on the present and next season.

“The main activity in 2026 will be the power unit and the areas where the power unit connects to the chassis, (while) aerodynamics rules apply and where all lap times are calculated from a chassis human perspective, it’s still a bit of a mystery. a journey of discovery.”
