Fairfax has codified its agreement with the Marin Open Space Trust to acquire a 100-acre tract called the Wall property.

The City Council unanimously approved the memorandum of understanding and authorized Mayor Barbara Coler to sign it at its May 22 meeting. The purpose of the agreement is to commemorate the open space trust’s intention to transfer title to the property to the city.

In the document, the trust pledges to raise $2.3 million to purchase the property and $500,000 to cover renovation costs, and to turn over both the funds and property to the city by Oct. 29.

The site, located north of the city center, offers stunning views of Mount Tamalpais and is a popular spot for wildlife, hikers and dog walkers.

Council member Chance Cutrano said the move would protect the land.

“You never know when you plant a seed, whether it will sprout and bear fruit,” he said at the meeting. “There was no guarantee it would ever be possible.”

Marin Open Space Trust board chairman Bill Long said after the meeting that about $2.5 million had been raised or donated. He added that the group is seeking a total of about $2.9 million.

“It was a significant step,” Long said. “We are already continuing to do so and intend to launch a comprehensive fundraising campaign which we aim to complete by the end of September.”

The trust fund recently requested a $500,000 grant from the California State Coastal Conservancy. This item will be considered as part of the consent calendar on June 6.

Janet Coleson, city attorney, said the land trust fund, known as MOST, would have to raise the full acquisition and renovation costs and place the funds in escrow for the memorandum of understanding to go into effect.
