Energy Partners with Farm for Unique Solar and Methane Plant Near Battle Creek | WKZO | Everything Kalamazoo

BATTLE CREEK, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Consumers Energy on Thursday broke ground on two renewable energy projects in partnership with Spring Creek Farms, launching the state’s first AgriEnergy center northwest of Battle Creek.

The dairy farm will feature a renewable natural gas (RNG) biodigester and a 140-megawatt solar panel, producing enough energy to power 25,000 homes.

According to David Hicks, vice president of clean energy development at Consumers Energy, “This first-of-its-kind project provides a model not only for other farms, but for the entire state on how to integrate the clean energy transition into existing businesses. This project will generate significant solar energy production and significantly reduce emissions, while also allowing the local institution to keep its doors open. This is truly a win for everyone.”

By partnering with Consumers Energy, Spring Creek Farms can continue operating while reducing emissions and adding a significant amount of energy to the grid. Moreover, the investment will provide the local community with tax revenues for over 30 years of the project duration.

Consumers Energy officials say RNG technology captures methane released when organic waste, such as cow manure on dairy farms, breaks down and cleans it, making it safe for customers and better for the environment.

Holly Bowers, vice president of gas engineering and supply at Consumers Energy, says, “Farmers like the Oesch family are truly at the forefront of this part of Michigan’s clean energy transition, and we look forward to the positive impact the AgriEnergy Center will have on their farm and community.”
