Biden-Harris administration announces recipient of nearly $900 million for clean school buses

These rebates will help school districts purchase more than 3,400 clean school buses – 92% of which will be electric – to accelerate the transition to zero-emission vehicles and ensure cleaner air in and around schools and communities. Through numerous funding opportunities under the program through grants and rebates, EPA has awarded nearly $3 billion to fund approximately 8,500 school bus replacements in more than 1,000 schools.

EPA Administrator Michael S. Regan made the announcement and highlighted how the program will reduce greenhouse gas emissions, save schools money and better protect children’s health, especially in communities already burdened by pollution.

“President Biden believes that every child deserves the opportunity to live healthy lives and breathe clean air, and his Investing in America program will do just that,” Regan said. “With this latest round of funding, we are transforming the nation’s school bus fleet to better protect our most valuable cargo – our children – while saving school districts money, improving air quality, and strengthening American manufacturing at the same time.”

“I am grateful to the Biden-Harris Administration for expanding the ability to provide clean school buses to schools and students in Mississippi’s Second Congressional District,” said Congressman Bennie G. Thompson.

In September 2023, the EPA announced the availability of at least $500 million in green school bus rebates in 2023. The rebate application period closed in February 2024 with an overwhelming response from school districts across the country looking to purchase electric and green school buses . Given the level of demand, including from low-income communities, tribal nations, and U.S. territories, EPA doubled the initial amount of funding available in this round to a total of almost $1 billion.

The third round of funding will build on previous investments of nearly $2 billion through 2023 rebates and grants under the Clean School Bus Program The Clean School Bus Program to further improve air quality in and around schools, reduce greenhouse gas pollution that fuels the climate crisis and accelerating America’s leadership in developing the clean vehicles of the future.
