Thousands of Maori demonstrate in New Zealand to protest government policies

On Thursday, thousands of Maori held protests across New Zealand against government policies targeting indigenous people.

Demonstrations saw significant turnout in cities, including the capital Wellington, according to the New Zealand Herald.

Protesters gathered outside Parliament House to express dissatisfaction with current and proposed policies, which include budget cuts affecting Māori communities.

Organizer Te Pati The leader of the Maori Party expressed serious concern about the government’s approach to the Maori population.

The government has previously committed to ensuring equal rights for all New Zealanders and has proposed reviewing or repealing some laws affecting Māori.

Maori make up about one-fifth of New Zealand’s five million population.
