This marks a remarkable milestone for the Indian power sector. On May 30, 2024, the country met an unprecedented maximum power demand of 250 GW. This achievement highlights rising industrial and residential energy use coupled with weather-related pressures. Additionally, the country met a record non-solar energy demand of 234.3 GW on May 29, reflecting strong energy demand across sectors.

On the same day, the northern region recorded its highest ever demand of 86.7 GW, while the western region recorded a peak demand of 74.8 GW. These regional data highlight the growing energy demand in different parts of the country.

Moreover, India’s thermal power generation also reached a new peak, reaching 176 GW (excluding buses) during non-sunny hours. This growth was significantly impacted by the strategic implementation of Section 11, which maximized production from imported coal and gas power plants. The efficiency and performance of India’s thermal power plants continue to play a key role in the country’s energy mix.

The share of renewable energy sources is equally significant. Solar power during daylight hours and wind power during non-sunny hours have played a key role in meeting the growing demand.

These achievements are a testament to the coordinated efforts of government agencies, power generation companies and grid operators. Their commitment to increasing generation capacity, optimizing resource allocation and implementing effective policies has played a key role in ensuring that India’s energy needs are effectively met. This collaborative effort highlights the energy sector’s resilience and ability to support the country’s growth and development.
