Pixel 8a and Pixel Set will receive Gemini Nano AI on the device

Media reports that the new Google Pixel 8a and Pixel 8 will likely receive generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) features on the device thanks to Gemini Nano technology. The tech giant has initiated an update to a system component that allows users to manually activate this functionality. Currently, Gemini Nano is supported on select smartphones, including the flagship Google Pixel 8 Pro and the recently announced Samsung Galaxy S24 series.

Now, last year’s Pixel 8 and the newly launched Pixel 8a will support Gemini Nano technology, thus enabling GenAI features on the device.

The problem is that Google will require users to manually activate Nano support on Pixel 8 and 8a by changing a setting in developer options, while Pixel 8 Pro users will have these features automatically enabled, according to a report by Android Authority.

Therefore, most Pixel 8/8a users may not use the Gemini Nano feature as they will likely not be aware of the option. However, the recent removal of the Google AICore app APK provides insight into a potential toggle of this feature, indicating a likely launch. Interestingly, this could also mean increased control over the feature for Pixel 8 Pro users.

While analyzing the latest AICore APK for Pixel 8 and Pixel 8a, Android Authority identified two toggles that are likely to be included in the Developer Options menu. The first switch, labeled “Enable AICore Persistent,” is intended to allocate some of the device’s memory for persistent operation.

On the other hand, the Enable GenAI features on device switch provides users with the ability to enable or disable GenAI features on their smartphone. The switch description states that it manages AI capabilities powered by AICore and using Google’s Gemini AI model.

Recall that ahead of its annual Google I/O event next week, Google recently officially unveiled its latest Pixel smartphone, the Pixel 8a. The phone has a 6.1-inch FHD+ OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and up to 2,000 nits of peak brightness, making it 40 percent brighter than last year’s Pixel 7a (read our full Pixel 7a review here).
