Representatives from Habitat for Humanity, Asian American Center of Frederick and Mobilize Frederick join Frederick County Executive Jessica Fitzwater and Department of Energy and Environment staff to announce the receipt of a federal grant to launch the Green Homes program.

Earlier this month, Frederick County Executive Jessica Fitzwater launched a new initiative aimed at helping residents who want to reduce home energy costs and live more sustainably. The new Green Homes Program, run by the Department of Energy and Environment, is open to all district residents. The project is funded by a nearly $1 million grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Environmental Justice Program.

According to the press release:

“These initiatives will help make Frederick County a more energy-efficient, resilient and inclusive community, ensuring that our work to reduce energy use and address climate change is inclusive for everyone,” said Fitzwater County Executive. “By helping ALICE households reduce their energy use, we not only help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but we also help families get the most out of their hard-earned money.”

“I am thrilled that our work has been supported by EPA and that we can work with great community partners to make our voices heard and influence positive change in our community,” said Tiara Lester, Sustainability Program Administrator for the Department of Energy and Environment. “Sustainability is for everyone and together we can achieve it.”

The Green Homes program consists of three main components:

  • The Green compass The program provides Community Navigators who help residents find, understand and take advantage of local, state and federal programs and incentives that can help improve their home environment, reduce energy costs and live sustainably.
  • The The Green Homes Challenge is a guide to sustainable living that provides participants with incentives and specific actions to support saving energy, making environmentally friendly choices and using renewable energy.
  • Our goal Green partnerships is to ensure that all Frederick County residents have the opportunity to enjoy sustainable living. By working with local organizations and community stakeholders, we make “going green” more possible for underserved and overburdened communities.

Community partners include Mobilize Frederick, Habitat for Humanity of Frederick County and the Asian American Center of Frederick. These organizations will help build resilience, educate about air quality and climate, and engage community members. For more information, visit FrederickCountyMD.gov/GreenHomes.
