Growth in primary sectors accelerates to 6.2% in April, led by electricity and natural gas

According to data released by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry on May 31, India’s eight key sectors grew 6.2 percent in April, led by strong performance in the power and steel sectors. This represents an increase from the revised 6 percent growth recorded in the prior-year month.

The production of natural gas (8.6% compared to 6.3% in March 2024), refinery products (3.9% compared to 1.5%), steel (7.1% compared to from 6.4%) and electricity (9.4% vs. 8.6%), while production slower for coal (7.5% vs. 8.7%), oil (1.6% vs. 2%) and cement (0.6% vs 10.6%).

Fertilizer production continued to decline, although at a slower rate (-0.8% compared to -1.3%).

Looking at the May-April period, infrastructure production grew by 7.6%, slightly lower than the 7.8% in the same period of the previous fiscal year.
