The birth of Open AI Chat-GPT signaled a new era of artificial intelligence (AI) and generative AI, namely large language models (LLMs) that are trained on massive amounts of data and can answer questions conversationally.

While Chat-GPT is trained in general data and can answer questions about everything from business plans to historical music composers, sector-specific LLMs provide significant benefits.

Sector-specific LLMs – such as those created for medical or legal fields – are trained using reliable data from each specific industry. This allows them to provide more accurate and in-depth answers to questions. Because people working in the above-mentioned industries must be trusted sources of authority, LLMs must prioritize the reliability and validity of their results.

Industry-specific LLM

Google’s Med-PaLM and Med-PaLM 2 (Medical-Specific LLM) were trained on medical texts and images. Thanks to this, they can perform functions such as analyzing a chest X-ray image or answering questions with an accuracy comparable to that of a doctor. The robust training of Med-PaLM and Med-PaLM 2 allowed them to achieve accuracy rates of 67.6% and 86.5%, respectively, on the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE). These were the first artificial intelligence models to pass the exam (60% pass rate).

Similar developments in the legal field include the use of industry-specific texts to aid in the development of LLMs. Legaltech Evisort has created the first contract-specific LLM. The model was trained on millions of legal documents, allowing it to analyze contracts (e.g. by asking whether a contract can be terminated early), draft clauses, and more.

Future

While successes are seen in the medical and legal fields, other industries also benefit from sector-specific LLMs (such as the use of BloombergGPT in the financial industry). As these models improve and become more accurate and reliable, they can offer consumers new and reliable ways to quickly obtain information and advice, and professionals in these fields an easy way to re-test their knowledge or improve their services.
