Following a significant drop in share value, Salesforce is exploring opportunities to revive growth, potentially through large-scale acquisitions, although analysts have raised concerns about the company’s strategy.

Salesforce (NYSE:CRM) suffered its second-biggest one-day decline on record, reminiscent of market swings during George W. Bush’s presidency. The decline, triggered by disappointing first-quarter fiscal results and weak sales growth forecasts, has raised concerns among investors and analysts alike.

Executives acknowledged challenges on the earnings call, citing “measured purchasing behavior” and extended deal cycles amid heightened budget scrutiny. RBC analyst Rishi Jaluria called the results a “real miss,” attributing the downturn to a challenging software market environment.

Amid an economic slowdown, there is speculation about Salesforce potentially pursuing acquisitions to spur growth. Some analysts warn against significant mergers and acquisitions, citing investor concerns, while others acknowledge the company’s historical tendency to make strategic acquisitions.

Salesforce’s notable acquisitions over the past decade, including Slack, Tableau and MuleSoft, underscore its aggressive growth strategy. CEO Marc Benioff hinted at the possibility of another significant acquisition, emphasizing a prudent approach focused on customer value and strategic alignment.

Benioff’s comments represent a departure from previous statements and signal the company’s openness to exploring transformational deals while ensuring they align with Salesforce’s core goals. Although Salesforce recently acquired Spiff for $419 million, speculation about potential acquisitions continues.

Analysts caution against acquisitions that are aimed solely at increasing revenues or EBITDA, recommending strategic alignment and proximity to Salesforce’s core business.
