Chaos in the CCC after the Welshman ‘sets fire’ to Tshabangu

Political Reporter: Chaos reigns within the divided Citizens’ Coalition for Change (CCC) over Sengezo Tshabangu’s self-appointment to the top parliamentary position.

Another faction of the same party, led by Welshman Ncube, claims that Tshabangu’s recent nominations to parliamentary committees were made by someone other than the party.

On Thursday, May 30, in both Houses of Parliament, Tshabangu was announced as the overall leader of the opposition in parliament with responsibility for the Senate, and Chikanga MP Lynette Karenyi-Kore was announced as leader of CCC legislators in the National Assembly.

Jacob Mafume, spokesman for the Ncube-led CCC faction, said the party was consulting with the Speaker over the annulment of the nominations made by Tshabangu. Said Mafume:

The Standing Committee takes note of the correct decision to annul the appointments made by Jameson Timba and in this regard notes the annulment made by the Speaker of Parliament, Hon Mudenda on 29 May 2024.

The management, however, noted that the new appointments made on May 30, 2024, were made without the involvement of the Citizens Coalition for Change led by Professor Welshman Ncube and before the party bodies met to discuss the issue.

Accordingly, following its deliberation, the Standing Committee noted that, to the extent that contacts with the Speaker of Parliament were ongoing, they should continue to address irregularities and ensure the legality of the new appointments.

Tshabangu, who appointed himself CCC senator for Matabeleland North province, is also currently a member of the International Parliamentary Union Delegation along with Sunningdale MP Maureen Kademaunga.

The appointments made by Tshabangu are as follows:

  • Hon. L. Karenyi-Kore, Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly;
  • Hon. Senator S. Tshabangu, Leader of the Opposition in the Senate and Overall Leader of the Opposition in Parliament;
