Fisheries Development Oman puts into operation the state-of-the-art ADAMAS vessel

Muscat: Fisheries Development Oman (FDO) has announced the introduction of ADAMAS to the fleet of its subsidiary, Oman Pelagic. Built to the highest international standards, this extraordinary vessel is a testament to FDO’s commitment to sustainable fishing practices and the economic development of Oman’s fishing sector.

FDO is the main investment arm of the Oman Investment Authority in the fisheries sector,
ADAMAS is a state-of-the-art fishing vessel built in 2024, proudly flying the flag of Oman. This is the latest work of the renowned Zamakona Shipyard in Pasaia, Spain, commissioned by the Omani state-owned company Oman Pelagic.

ADAMAS, a name derived from the Latin word for diamond, symbolizes the strength and resilience that have defined Omani sailors over the centuries. Like a diamond, forged under great pressure to become one of the hardest substances on Earth, the determination and perseverance of Omani fishermen have been tested and proven time and time again. Our maritime history is filled with stories of courage and innovation, and ADAMAS is the modern embodiment of this spirit.

With a cruising speed of approximately 17 knots and equipped with state-of-the-art environmental instruments and advanced data collection software, ADAMAS ensures operational efficiency and sustainability. Tangle-free fish aggregating devices (FADs) made of biodegradable materials increase selectivity and contribute to ecosystem protection.

Measuring an impressive 84 meters in length, ADAMAS has a capacity of 1,200 tonnes, making it ideal for operations in international waters, where it fishes for various species of tuna in international waters. The ship’s propulsion system is powered by modern engines, ensuring efficiency and reliability while minimizing fuel consumption even in the most difficult conditions.

“ADAMAS embodies our commitment to sustainable fishing practices and demonstrates our commitment to maintaining the highest quality standards in the industry,” said Muneer Ali Al-Muniri, Chairman of Fisheries Development Oman, speaking on the occasion. “This vessel represents not just an investment, but a profound step forward in our commitment to enhance Oman’s seafood industry and maritime heritage in line with Oman Vision 2040. With this investment, we are strengthening Oman’s position as an attractive destination for local and international investors seeking growth opportunities in the aquaculture sector “

“The vessel is designed to operate efficiently, maximizing fishing potential while minimizing environmental impact. This is perfectly in line with FDO’s core values of focusing on the responsible use of renewable resources such as biomass and small pelagic fish, ensuring the long-term sustainability of Oman’s fishing industry,” he added.

The launch of ADAMAS marks the completion of the first phase of FDO and Oman Pelagic’s expansion efforts in the fisheries sector. This phase included the design and construction of the vessel, commissioning and final commercial operation of the vessel. The next phases, which have already been launched in various sectors, will see further development in various sectors covering seafood products, fishing ports, ships, processing and distribution.

The introduction of ADAMAS, along with her sister vessel Acila, represents a significant step forward in strengthening Oman’s commercial fishing fleet. By promoting sustainable fishing and landings of high-quality tuna, Oman Pelagic and Fisheries Development Oman aims to contribute to the blue economy and national food security.

“Today we gather to celebrate a momentous occasion – the launching of the ADAMAS fishing vessel. It’s not just the inauguration of a new ship; is a tribute to Oman’s rich and illustrious maritime history. ADAMAS symbolizes unparalleled strength and resilience like the sailors of our past who sailed the vast oceans with courage and skill,” said Mirdas Al Rawahi, CFO of Oman Pelagic.

ADAMAS offers all the facilities necessary to ensure a comfortable and productive working environment, including specialized equipment for freezing and storage at very low temperatures, ensuring the highest quality of tuna products. The vessel will operate in international waters and is registered with the International Classification Society for High Seas Navigation.
