How to connect a Samsung TV to Alexa and Echo Dot

If you have a Samsung Smart TV and want to control it using voice commands, you’ve come to the right place. Here you’ll learn how to connect your Samsung TV to Alexa and control it using voice commands.

Adding your Samsung TV to Alexa allows you to control your TV using voice commands. Imagine turning on the TV, adjusting the volume or switching channels. You can do all this with your Alexa device. You can say something like, “Alexa, play XYZ video on Hulu,” and the video will play in the Hulu app.

How to connect a Samsung TV to Alexa (2020 or newer TV models)

If you have a Samsung Smart TV with Alexa built-in, follow the steps below to connect it to Alexa. You can easily check Alexa support. If your TV remote has a microphone button with a sound icon or the Alexa app is pre-installed, your TV supports Alexa. Some newer Samsung TV models also don’t have Alexa built-in.

Step 1: Turn on your Samsung TV and open the Alexa app. If the Alexa app is not available on your TV, continue to the next method.

Step 2: Sign in to your Amazon account by scanning the QR code on your TV screen or by visiting the Amazon website and entering the code.

Step 3: Follow the instructions to link your account. Once you do this, your Samsung TV will be registered to your Amazon account.

Step 4: Finally, choose whether you want to enable Alexa hands-free calling (available on select TV models). Once enabled, you can talk to your TV remote without pressing the microphone button. You can use Alexa’s wake command.

How to connect a Samsung TV to Alexa (earlier TV models)

If your Samsung Smart TV doesn’t have the Alexa app built-in, follow the steps below to connect your TV to Alexa.

Note: With this method, you can execute limited basic commands like On/Off TV, Change Volume, Play/Pause Content and a couple of more basic commands. While on Alexa supported TV, you can execute all sort of commands like opening certain app.

Step 1: Install both Amazon Alexa (Android, iPhone) i Smart Things (Android, iPhone) if you don’t already have them.

Step 2: Then connect your Alexa device and Samsung TV to the same Wi-Fi network.

Step 3: Register your Samsung TV to the SmartThings app using the same Samsung account as your TV. You can check out this registration guide. To check your Samsung account on your TV, go to Settings > General > System manager > Samsung account.

Step 4: On your phone, open the Alexa app and sign in with your details. Now go to More > Skills and gameplay.

Step 5: Search Smart Things and turn it on. The app will redirect you to your browser and ask you to connect your SmartThings account, so follow the instructions in your browser.

Step 6: Once you authorize Alexa to access SmartThings devices, it will automatically find and add your Samsung TV in the Alexa app.

You can now use your Android or iOS device to control your TV with voice commands. As mentioned, you can use limited commands.

How to connect a Samsung TV to Echo Dot

If you have an Alexa Echo device, you can also use it to control your Samsung TV with your voice. This is quite similar to the last method. The commands you can execute are also limited.

Step 1: First, follow all the steps above to connect your Samsung TV to the Alexa app.

Step 2: Provide yours Echo point or another Alexa speaker is connected to the Alexa app on your phone. You can refer to this guide for detailed instructions.

Step 3: Now in the Alexa app, go to Devices tab and then yours Samsung TV.

Step 4: Under General you will find Alexa connected device Option. Open it.

Step 5: Here you will see your Echo Dot or other Alexa speaker connected to the same account. Click on the one you want to connect to.

Step 6: It will take a few seconds and you will be ready to go. You can confirm this by issuing commands such as “Alexa, turn off my Samsung TV” or “Turn on my Samsung TV.”

Note: Don’t forget to change the name of your TV to another easy name because you have to say the exact same name that is given in the Alexa app.

Alexa commands to control your TV

Once you connect your Samsung TV to Alexa, you can easily control it using voice commands. Below are some commands you can try:

  • “Alexa, turn on (turn on/off) the TV.”
  • “Alexa, increase the volume (up/down) on your TV.”
  • “Alexa, mute the TV name.”
  • “Alexa, channel (up/down) on TV.”
  • “Alexa, change the channel to (channel number) on your TV.”
  • “Alexa, change the input to (input name) on your TV.”
  • “Alexa, (play/pause/stop/resume) on your TV.”
  • “Alexa, show movies (comedy/drama/romance).”
  • “Alexa, play (video name) on (streaming app).”
  • “Alexa, open (app name) on your TV.”

Many of these commands won’t work if your TV doesn’t have Alexa built-in.
