Nigerian Breweries is finalizing the acquisition of 80% of shares in Distell Wines and Spirit

According to an official statement, Nigerian Breweries Plc has officially finalized the acquisition of a majority stake (80%) in Distell Wines and Spirits Nigeria Limited (Distell Nigeria).

The transaction follows the approval of the South African Reserve Bank (SARB) for Nigerian Breweries Plc to acquire the shares of Distell International Limited, now known as Heineken Beverages Holdings Limited, in Distell Nigeria, as well as the import operations of Distell International Limited in Nigeria.

According to the Managing Director of Nigerian Breweries Plc, Hans Essaadi, the acquisition and subsequent launch of the business is in line with the brewery’s strategic goal of expanding its current product offering beyond beer to include wines, spirits and aromatized alcoholic beverages.

Essaadi, noting that the company remains steadfast in its commitment to serving diverse consumer needs, said: “This acquisition is part of an effort to provide access to a complementary, multi-category portfolio of high-growth brands in the wine and spirits market segment and leverage significant opportunities growth in the wines and spirits segment of the brewing industry.

We are thrilled to have completed this process and can’t wait to see how it will transform our business.” In his remarks, the Managing Director of Distell Nigeria, Mr. Steve Ighorimoto, said the acquisition is an exciting new chapter for the company as it will help enhance the capacity needed to achieve better business performance.

These changes will strengthen the organization’s production, marketing and distribution capabilities, while ensuring sustainable development and maximum value creation for all stakeholders, he said.

Distell Nigeria produces local wines and ciders under license from Heineken Beverages. Thanks to the acquisition, Nigerian Breweries will have access to both local production and import of South African brands of wines, spirits and flavored alcoholic beverages.
