The Metropolitan Library System launches its summer reading program on June 1

The Metropolitan Library System transmits this information as set out below:

The Metropolitan Library System’s summer reading program returns June 1 through July 31. This annual event, which dates back over ninety years, celebrates the power of reading under the slogan “The Adventure Begins at Your Library.”

Summer reading serves as a tool to combat the “summer slide,” which refers to the decline in academic skills that some students experience during their break from school. Studies have shown that students can avoid a crisis by reading 20 minutes a day.

Beanstack, a website and app, is one way participants can join the program. It provides a seamless experience for both experienced participants and novices. Participants can create an account and link their library card to be entered into prize drawings. Paper reading logs are also available in each library.

Participants earn points by logging reading minutes and completing activities, unlocking badges and rewards, including books and incentives. Registrants receive a short stack coupon at IHOP while supplies last, with additional prizes earned upon reaching 600 points and entries into exclusive prize drawings.

The Summer Reading program also supports community engagement through the Read More initiative. If the community reaches its goal of 12 million points, the Latino Community Development Agency will receive a generous donation in the form of a book.

Neighborhood Arts also returns on June 1, presenting a variety of performances of music, dance, theater and more. Sponsored by the OKC Arts Council, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Oklahoma Arts Council, it promotes accessible arts education. Featured bands include OKC Improv, Lucas Ross, Oklahoma Violin Ensemble and more. For the full schedule, visit metrolibrary.org/neighborhoodarts.

Summer reading activities are designed for all ages, with options available for infants and adults at 19 library system locations. For more information, visit metrolibrary.org/summerreading.
