The mayor of Atlanta, Georgia issues an executive order declaring a state of emergency to ensure water safety.

Atlanta, Georgia Mayor Andre Dickens issued an executive order on June 2, 2024 regarding water safety.

The Executive Order is intended to allow the City of Atlanta to quickly access resources to address disruptions to community water supplies.

Dickens also declared a state of emergency on June 1, 2024, which will allow the city to more quickly access needed resources.

On Friday, May 31, 2024, a water main broke in Atlanta, leaving thousands of people without access to water. One of the two water main failures was repaired by Sunday, June 2, 2024.

The lack of clean water resulted in some hospital patients being transferred to another location. Most hospital operations, including visits, procedures and surgeries, are expected to return to normal.

Firefighters gave water to residents while waiting for the water supply to be restored.

The city was under a boil water advisory for the weekend until Monday, June 3, 2024.

The first water main break began on May 31, 2024 and occurred at Joseph E. Boone Boulevard NW and James P Brawley Drive. This water outage led to the closure of attractions in downtown Atlanta, including Megan Thee Stallion’s concert, which was postponed until later in the weekend.

The outage also forced the closure of the Georgia Aquarium, as well as several Fulton County libraries, and impacted City Hall and Grady Memorial Hospital.

The second incident occurred on May 31, 2024 at the intersection with road 11vol and West Peachtree Street in downtown Atlanta. The report showed that water was still pouring into the street the next morning.
