Major engine manufacturers collaborate on future engine technology

Toyota Motor Corporation, Subaru Corporation and Mazda Motor Corporation have committed to developing new engines adapted to electrification and carbon neutrality. The aim of these engines is to optimize integration with electric powertrains, transform vehicle packaging into more compact designs and decarbonize internal combustion engines (ICEs) by making them compatible with a variety of carbon neutral fuels.

Innovative cooperation

Toyota, Subaru and Mazda have long understood the diverse lifestyles of their customers, which has led them to develop signature engines that represent their brands and meet unique needs. This collaboration focuses on expanding decarbonization options by evolving engines suited to the future energy environment.

A shared vision of carbon neutrality

“To provide our customers with a variety of options to achieve carbon neutrality, it is essential to address the challenge of developing engines that are suited to the future energy environment. Three companies with the same aspirations will advance engine technologies through friendly competition,” said Koji Sato, president and CEO of Toyota Motor Corporation.

This partnership highlights the role future engines will play in achieving carbon neutrality. The next generation of engines will not only improve performance on their own, but will also optimize integration with electric drive units, leveraging the advantages of each.

Compact and efficient design

The new engines will revolutionize vehicle packaging with more compact designs, allowing for a lower bonnet and improved aerodynamics. This innovation will contribute to improved fuel efficiency and compliance with stringent emissions regulations. The engines will also become carbon neutral by moving away from fossil fuels and offering compatibility with alternatives such as e-fuel, biofuels and liquid hydrogen.

Signature engines and carbon neutral fuels

Each company brings its iconic engines to the collaboration. Subaru offers a horizontally opposed engine with low vibration and a lower center of gravity – Toyota offers an inline four-cylinder engine that balances high power and thermal efficiency, and Mazda offers a rotary engine.

These engines will be adapted to run on CN fuels, which have zero net CO2 emissions throughout their life cycle. CN fuels include e-fuel made from hydrogen and carbon dioxide, and biofuels made from biomass.
