Data center-focused renewable energy initiative planned for Asia

The volume of news about data center launches is matched only by news about initiatives to reduce energy demand in this rapidly growing industry. This week’s names include Asia-based data center platform company Digital Edge (Singapore) and Peak Energy Investments, a leading renewable energy developer and independent power producer operating across Asia.

The two companies have entered into an agreement under which Digital Edge and Peak Energy will collaborate on renewable energy projects to power Digital Edge data centers in the Asia-Pacific region.

As part of this partnership, Peak Energy and Digital Edge say they will jointly implement an initial pipeline of 500 MW of operating capacity for both existing and planned data centers within three years.

Peak Energy, which focuses on combining solar, wind and storage technologies, will target renewable energy projects in countries where Digital Edge already has deployments, including Japan, Korea, Indonesia, India and the Philippines, as well as other fast-growing markets to support the development of the Digital Edge.

These projects will support decarbonization of up to 1 GW of power and generate over 1,300 GWh per year, which – according to the partners – is equivalent to taking 216,000 cars off the road.

This is not a new direction for Digital Edge. Samuel Lee, CEO of Digital Edge, explains: “To date, we have made significant progress in the use of renewable energy on the Digital Edge platform, with our EDGE1 facility in Jakarta becoming the first data center in Indonesia powered by 100% renewable energy sources thanks to our partnership with Peak Energy, we will be able to continue to build on these initiatives and achieve our ESG goals.
