“If it’s not beautiful, we’ve failed.”

The designer transforms clean energy into a work of art by reinventing the design features of wind turbines. According to an article in Fast Company, designer and inventor Joe Doucet has developed a way to combine functionality and aesthetics with a beautiful wind turbine wall.

Doucet’s revolutionary design replaced traditional wind turbines with a row of spiral blades that spin in the wind. When vertical turbines harness wind energy, they rotate synchronously, creating a rippling effect that imitates a curtain moving in the wind.

To turn his vision into reality, Doucet co-founded Airiva, a startup dedicated to innovating in renewable energy and changing the way the world approaches sustainability. After more than two years of research, design and engineering testing, Doucet and his team at Airiva have created a wind product that is both beautiful and functional.

The team initially tested 16 different blade designs, but after multiple rounds of testing in two locations – at the University of Washington and in an East Coast wind tunnel – the spiral-shaped blades emerged as the most effective combination of functionality and visual appeal.

Vertical wind turbines themselves are not a new concept; however, Airiva strives to offer companies a more visually pleasing alternative to traditional turbines. Although large windmill-like turbines produce more energy than Airiva’s smaller, vertical turbines, Airiva’s goal is to help companies transition to renewable energy without sacrificing the appearance of the campus.

Throughout the design and engineering process, Doucet was determined to preserve the beauty of the turbines, stating, “If it’s not beautiful, we’ve failed.”

By helping companies transition to clean energy sources, Airiva is paving the way to a cleaner future. Reducing the world’s use of dirty energy not only reduces the amount of pollution in the atmosphere, but also protects communities from natural disasters resulting from a changing climate.

After the initial production process that creates the turbines, wind energy is a pollution-free energy source.

Although Airiva’s vertical wind turbines are not yet ready for market, the Airiva team is confident that their turbines will produce clean energy at a competitive price.

“By combining design, research, innovation and engineering to expand the way we think about renewable energy, we are on a continuous path to bring new products to the world,” the company says on its website.
