DEWA chief inspects phase 6 of the 1,800 MW Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Energy Park

Director General and Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, recently assessed the progress of Phase 6 of the 1,800 MW Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, in line with the Independent Power Producer (IPP) model, with investments with a total value of AED 5.5 billion. This phase is expected to provide clean energy to around 540,000 homes and is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by around 2.36 million tonnes per year over a vast area of 20 square kilometers. Notably, Phase Six achieved a record low levelized cost of energy (LCOE) of 1.6215 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh).

The sixth phase is implemented using state-of-the-art bifacial photovoltaic technologies with single-axis tracking, underlining DEWA’s commitment to innovation in the field of renewable energy.

The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park has the distinction of being the world’s largest single-site solar park, with a capacity expected to exceed 5,000 megawatts by 2030, attracting a total investment of approximately AED 50 billion. These initiatives are in line with Dubai’s Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and Dubai’s Net Zero Carbon Strategy 2050, which aim to source 100% of Dubai’s total generation capacity from clean energy sources by 2050.

Currently, the solar park boasts a production capacity of 2,860 MW, with an additional 1,800 MW under construction. Once completed, Phase 6 will increase total generation capacity to 4,660 MW by 2026. DEWA expects to source approximately 27% of its generation mix from clean energy sources by 2030.

During the review, Al Tayer was accompanied by Waleed Bin Salman, executive vice president of business development and excellence at DEWA, and other senior DEWA officials.
