In Windows 11 version 22631.3807, Copilot is an application

After releasing the Tuesday patch for Windows 11 this month, Microsoft today released another interesting update, but this time in the Release Preview channel. The update is now available for versions 22H2 and 23H2 of Windows 11.

Windows 11 version 23H2 users in the Release Preview channel receive the update with build number 22631.3807 (KB5039302), while users with version 22H2 receive the update with build number 22621.3807.

The update introduces many new features, including Copilot as an application similar to what Microsoft introduced on Copilot+ computers, but without system-wide capabilities. The settings page now includes a new Game Pass recommendations tab, the Show Desktop option has reappeared in the taskbar options, and many other new features. You can see all the new features in the new preview version below.

Windows 11 Build 22631.3807 and 22621.3807

  • New! We are improving the operation of Copilot on Windows. It is now pinned to the taskbar and will behave like an application. Thanks to this, you can use common applications. For example, you can resize, move and snap the window.
  • New! This update adds a new Game Pass recommendations tab to the Settings home page. This home page appears in Home and Pro editions when you sign in to Windows with a Microsoft account. The tab appears if you are actively playing games on your computer.
  • New! By default, the show desktop button is back on the taskbar. To change this, right-click on the taskbar and select Taskbar Settings. At the bottom of the page you will find taskbar behaviors.
  • New! This update applies to File Explorer. You can now create 7-Zip and Tape Archive (TAR) files using the context menu. When you right-click a file, the Compress to Item option allows you to compress the file using tools such as gzip, bzip2, and others. A new compression wizard is also available in additional options. It will help you choose more formats and add details. To add multiple files to archives in other TAR formats, different types of compression can be used. You can also change the compression level and choose the types of data to store in each archive.
  • New! This update adds support for Emoji 15.1. Windows supports Unicode-like shapes for family groups. But Windows will continue to use humans for them. You can also select the direction of certain people’s emojis to the right or left. The new emojis are:
    • Horizontal and vertical head shaking
    • Phoenix
    • Lime
    • Brown mushroom
    • Broken chain 48617543
  • New! You can now copy files from the Windows Share window. Just click new copy
  • New! This update affects OneDrive. You can now use it as a RemoteApp on your Azure Virtual Desktop.

Some new features are introduced gradually. Many improvements and changes have also been introduced, which you can check out below.

  • This update changes DDR speed units from MHz to MT/s.
  • This update resolves an issue with USB devices. Ejecting them using Safely Remove Hardware fails. This happens when Task Manager is open.
  • This update affects process handles. Task Manager releases them faster when it stops a process.
  • This update improves the reliability of Task Manager.
  • This update affects the sorting order of processes in Task Manager. Performance is better after reordering.
  • This update improves the availability of Task Manager by improving:
    • Keyboard focus
    • Tab key navigation
    • Text scaling
    • Reading element names by screen readers
    • High contrast heat maps and more.
  • This update makes it easier to resize the Task Manager window by grabbing the top of its window.
  • This update resolves an issue that affects Group Policy. Does not detect when network speed is low. Instead, it is assumed that a high-speed connection is present.
  • This update resolves an issue affecting direct storage access (S2D) and remote direct memory access (RDMA). When you use them with SMBdirect on your networks, the networks crash. You also lose the ability to manage clusters.
  • This update resolves an issue affecting GPUs. They do not enter an idle state that prevents them from consuming energy.
  • This update adds the HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\DWM ForceDisableModeChangeAnimation (REG_DWORD) registry key. If you set its value to 1 (or a non-zero number), the display mode change animation will be disabled. If the value is 0 or the key does not exist, the animation is enabled.
  • This update updates the Country and Carrier Settings (COSA) resource profiles for some mobile carriers.
  • This update fixes an issue with the Snipping tool. When you use it to record videos on some computers, the sound is distorted.
  • This update resolves an issue affecting Azure Virtual Desktop sessions. A deadlock prevents you from logging in to them.
  • This update resolves an issue affecting the touch keyboard. It cannot be used to enter special characters. This happens when you use the Japanese 106 keyboard.

If you’re a Windows 11 user on the release preview channel, you can check for updates in Settings > Windows Update. Don’t forget to test this update if you’re using the Insider preview channel.
