Taking part in Question time Today is “businessman and advisor” Iain Anderson. Guido wonders if the BBC is going to mention that Anderson, a corporate lobbyist, wrote Labour’s. “long-term plan for government-business relations” along with his colleague who has now decided to work for the Labor Party. It bears the lofty title “New Partnership”…

The plan is an official work document. He says the party should relax rules on regulated industries to “eliminate regulatory bottlenecks” we have been observing since 2016 and we commit to implementation “co-creation” strategy and policy with business. Guido notes that Iain Anderson founded and still runs Cicero, a government lobbying firm that currently represents at least 16 clients in these highly regulated industries, including abrdn, American Express, BlackRock and Lloyds of London. The policy document also insists “partnership council” Down “co-create strategy and policy” in areas “not currently represented” in government e.g “financial services and technologies”. Funny then, most of Cicero customers they operate in this particular sector…

Co-conspirators may recall that Anderson (who was also chairman of Stonewall) very publicly switched his professed love of the Tories and Liz Truss to support the Labor Party last year. Guido then noted that only a cynic would think that a seasoned government lobbyist would always be lucky to publicly change his longtime party affiliation well in advance in general election polls. And only a cynic would think that Labor’s business plan is proof that the strategy is working well…
